Big Backyard

If you have a big backyard, consider yourself lucky. It is not important to save space or be strictly organized, and a big backyard can allow for gorgeous views and a perception of endless spaciousness. On the other hand, a big backyard can be big cost and big maintenance.

The first issue to consider is whether your backyard is already landscaped. If you just bought a home that came with a landscaped backyard, that can provide both a blessing and a curse. If you love the landscaping that came with your house, then you only need to concern yourself with maintaining and enhancing your big backyard. However, if you hate the landscaping, then the costs will mount beyond those of people who buy a new home with no landscaping because you will first have to demo/excavate before you can begin to install landscaping to your taste.

With a big backyard, there are no boundaries. You can bring in a home theater and still have room for a volleyball court and a great children’s playground. However, you still need to make sure that you allow for sufficient space between each zone and make sure that you are not overcrowding your large backyard. To do this, bring in a few large scale pieces—like a playground—but balance it out with some small scale pieces—like a little bistro set or chaise lounger. In addition, do not avoid landscaping with flowers, plants, and trees just because your backyard is huge. If the cost for planting flowers around the perimeter of your entire backyard is prohibitive, plant bunches of flowers in each corner and fill in with additional plants each year until you have it fully landscaped. You also could purchase plants from big box stores after Independence Day when they offer steep discounts.

A big backyard requires unique maintenance tools. If your yard is an acre or larger, consider purchasing a riding lawnmower or hiring a lawn service to mow, treat weeds and insects, and apply fertilizer. A push mower, even if it is self-propelled could be a task that takes hours to complete if you have an extremely big backyard.

With a big backyard, the possibilities are endless as long as you are willing to do the work required to properly maintaining a lot of land. Big backyards add value to a home and are a great place to house a swimming pool, outdoor theater, playground, sandbox, or outbuilding.
