Backyard Pool

So you want a backyard pool? Besides dreaming about pools and selecting one within your budget, there are many considerations about safety, maintenance, and pool beauty. Planning ahead and meticulous upkeep can ensure you have a beautiful pool for many years to come.

  1. Do you have young kids in your immediate or extended family? Beyond making your pool safe for homeowner’s insurance reasons, consider that drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children under age 6. It is imperative that you surround your pool with a fence that young children will not be able to get through when adults are not available to supervise.
  2. Are you hoping to install a beautiful swimming pool landscape, or are you mainly concerned with getting a pool immediately for functional reasons? Choosing a stunning swimming pool design and hiring a landscaper can easily double the cost of your pool purchase, and it most likely will not be returned to you if you decide to sell your home. Although pool landscaping can be a relaxing counterpart to your pool, and the addition of water features, stone work, or a large paver patio can add to your enjoyment, understand that it might not be the best investment. A new kitchen or bath, for instance, would be a better choice if you are not planning on staying in your home for more than 5 years.
  3. What is your climate? Are you lucky enough to live in an area where your backyard pool can be used year-round or almost year-round? If not, are you prepared to cover and winterize your pool and store all the pool paraphernalia during the off season? Where we live, it is only feasible to swim from June until early September. In our case, it is not a great idea to use up a large amount of backyard space for a pool, especially since we have limited backyard space anyway.
  4. Are you excited about a backyard pool and landscaping so much that you are willing to put aside thousands when it comes time for a new liner, new filtration system, heater and utility costs, etc.? There are many costs associated with a pool that may come as a surprise for people who did not have a pool growing up. In any case, installing a backyard pool with considerations for safety and expense could be a great choice for a young family that enjoys relaxing afternoons at home.
